The best way to get a feel for how these sounds are different is to visit the free website Forvo.com, type in the words you’d like to hear, and listen to the differences for yourself. Then the next time you speak with a native, just give your best attempt and they will help you get even closer!

SUN

The third nasal sound to work on (at least for standard French) sounds like the “uh” sound in the English word “sun”, said through your nose. You can also think of it as a nasalized “ah” sound. It comes up in the following letter combinations:

ain/aim (train / faim – train / hunger)

ein/en (plein / examen – full / exam)

in/im (intelligente / importante – intelligent / important)

um/un (brun / parfum – brown / perfume)

ym/yn (sympa / syndicat – nice / syndicate)
